Naomi Luban, MD, Discusses Importance of Blood Transfusion Protocols
Naomi L.C. Luban, MD, Chief of Transfusion Medicine at Children’s National Health System, discusses with AABB News the importance of healthcare institutions establishing standard protocols and strategies to minimize the risk of complications for pediatric patients needing blood transfusions. Dr. Luban says Children’s National has contributed to the establishment of best practice guidelines. She stressed that it is vitally important to properly communicate the guidelines to clinicians to improve care for critically ill infants and children. “We have our evidence-based justifications posted online so that they are easily accessible with electronic ordering systems that guide clinicians,” Dr. Luban says. AABB is a nonprofit association dedicated to advancing transfusion medicine, cellular therapies, and patient blood management.
