Pediatric PANS/PANDAS
What You Need to Know
Pediatric acute-onset neuropsychiatric syndrome (PANS) and pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorder associated with streptococcal infections (PANDAS) are diagnoses that often include the sudden onset of obsession, compulsions, tics or eating restrictions as well as symptoms from at least two of seven categories.
Key Symptoms
The most common symptoms include:
- Significant obsession, compulsions or tics
- Eating restrictions
- Anxiety/Separation anxiety
- Emotional lability and/or depression
- Irritability, aggression and/or severely oppositional behaviors
- Behavioral (developmental) regression
- Deterioration in school performance
- Sensory or motor abnormalities
- Somatic signs and symptoms, including sleep disturbances, enuresis or urinary frequency
Diagnosis
A team of specialists may all interview your child and the family to help determine a diagnosis. In addition they may perform the following:
- Behavioral health evaluation
- Fill out a questionnaire
- Bloodwork
- Lumbar punctures
- Electroencephalography
- MRI scans
Treatment
Depending on the diagnosis treatment may vary, common treatments for children with PANS/PANDAS may include:
- Cognitive behavioral therapy(CBT)
- Medications
- Additional care with an immunologist
- Further testing, such as MRI, EEG and lumbar puncture
