What is neck mass excision?

Neck mass excision is when a doctor removes a cyst or lump from inside your child’s neck. The surgeon makes a small opening in your child’s neck crease and takes out the mass.

Neck masses in children are common. Some are present at birth, and most are not cancer. A mass can be a cyst (fluid-filled), an enlarged lymph node or another type of solid lump. Neck masses can be caused by infection or other diseases. Neck mass surgery may be appropriate if your child has been treated for an infection with antibiotics but still has a swollen area in the neck. The doctor may send a sample of the mass for a biopsy after neck mass excision.
