Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 (MEN2) is a genetic condition that increases the risk of developing medullary thyroid cancer and certain tumors in the endocrine system, especially the adrenal glands. MEN2 is caused by a mutation in the RET gene. This genetic change may be inherited from a parent or may occur for the first time in an affected individual.

Are there different types of MEN2?

There are two main types of MEN2: MEN2A and MEN2B. Familial medullary thyroid carcinoma is considered a variation of MEN2A. The features and cancer risks can vary depending on the specific type and genetic mutation.

MEN2A is marked by medullary thyroid cancer and may also include pheochromocytoma (a tumor of the adrenal gland) and hyperparathyroidism.
MEN2B is marked by medullary thyroid cancer and pheochromocytoma. It may also be associated with benign growths called mucosal neuromas, intestinal ganglioneuromatosis, and certain physical features such as tall, thin stature and long fingers.

What are common symptoms of MEN2?

Medullary thyroid cancer
Tumors of the adrenal glands (called pheochromocytomas, present in some people with MEN2A)
Hyperparathyroidism (in some people with MEN2A)
Benign growths (mucosal neuromas) on the lips, tongue or eyelids (in MEN2B)
Constipation related to intestinal ganglioneuromatosis (in MEN2B)
Tall, thin body build (in MEN2B)
Long fingers and long arms (in MEN2B)
