Nasal Dermoid

A nasal dermoid is a rare, non-cancerous growth that appears on or near a child’s nose, often present at birth. It forms during early development when skin and other tissue cells become trapped beneath the surface, creating a small lump that may contain hair, oil glands or other skin elements. While usually harmless, nasal dermoids can grow over time and sometimes connect to deeper structures in the face or skull.

Nasal dermoids can affect any child, but they are most often diagnosed in infants and young children. These rare congenital growths develop at random during early pregnancy when skin and tissue cells become trapped near the nose. 

Nasal dermoids in children often appear as a small, firm lump on or near the nose, usually present at birth. The bump may be painless and skin-colored, and sometimes includes a tiny opening (called a pit) that may drain fluid or contain a small hair. In some cases, the lump may grow slowly over time or become infected, causing redness or tenderness. If the dermoid is located between the eyes or on the bridge of the nose, imaging may be needed to check for deeper connections to facial structures.

Nasal dermoids in children are typically diagnosed through a physical exam and imaging tests. If the lump is located on or near the bridge of the nose, doctors may recommend an MRI or CT scan to check whether the growth connects to deeper tissues in the face or skull. These scans help ensure safe and accurate treatment planning, especially before surgery. Early diagnosis by a pediatric specialist is important to prevent infection and guide the best care for your child.

Nasal dermoids in children are typically treated with surgery to safely remove the growth and prevent future complications.
