Drug-Induced Sleep Endoscopy (DISE)

Drug-induced sleep endoscopy is performed two ways:

• DISE alone
• DISE with other airway procedures: While looking at the area with the endoscope, the doctor can treat other problems affecting the airway.

• Your child’s unique anatomy and sleep position play a role in obstructive sleep apnea, and DISE shows the doctor what is happening with your child.
• The test shows breathing and airway activity when your child is actually asleep, which gives doctors more information than examining the airway when they are awake.
• There are several treatments for OSA, and DISE results can help doctors recommend the most appropriate one for your child.

A drug-induced sleep endoscopy procedure may cause:

• Breathing changes during sedation (Your child is closely monitored throughout the process, so any changes are seen and addressed right away.)
• Mild, temporary soreness in the nose afterward

Drug-induced sleep endoscopy takes place in a hospital operating room. DISE itself takes only minutes. You will be given information on how to prepare your child, which may include fasting or avoiding certain medications.

Drug-induced sleep endoscopy typically involves the following steps:

1. The doctor gives your child a gentle sedative to help them fall asleep.
2. Once your child is asleep, the doctor inserts a flexible tube called an endoscope through the nose. 
3. The endoscope has a tiny camera that lets the doctor watch the airway and see where the obstruction is happening.
4. The doctor watches and records activity in the airway during sleep apnea episodes.

• Your child will wake up quickly after the test. 
• The doctor will follow up and discuss the results with you and go over any further treatment or tests to consider. 
• You and your child can return home.
• The medicine does not have long-term side effects, so your child can resume regular activities when they are ready.
