Direct Laryngoscopy

Direct laryngoscopy is performed for two reasons:

• Diagnosis: The doctor uses a laryngoscope to see the voice box and airway and identify any problems.
• Intervention: While looking at the area with the scope, the doctor can remove small areas of tissue, insert a breathing tube or perform a procedure to widen the airway.

• Direct laryngoscopy gives the doctor a clear view of your child’s airway, so it is easier to see any problems.
• The doctor can perform procedures in that area right away.

Issues after direct laryngoscopy may include:

• A sore throat for up to 48 hours
• Injury to vocal cords (this is very rare)
• Temporary hoarseness
• New narrowing (stenosis) in the airway (this is very rare) 

Consulting a board-certified otolaryngologist (ear, nose and throat specialist) who specializes in children’s care minimizes risks.

Direct laryngoscopy takes place in a surgical center or hospital operating room. The procedure itself takes only minutes, but preparation and recovery can take one to three hours. Your child may not have anything to eat or drink the morning before the procedure. 

Direct laryngoscopy typically involves the following steps:

1. The doctor gives your child general anesthesia.
2. Once your child is asleep, the doctor inserts a rigid tube into your child’s mouth, past the tongue, and into the airway.
3. Small instruments, a light, and a small camera help the doctor see the voice box and nearby areas.
4. The doctor may treat any visible problems. 

Recovery from a direct laryngoscopy:

1. If the laryngoscopy is only for diagnosis, your child can typically go home after recovering from the anesthesia.
2. If the direct laryngoscopy includes a treatment, your child may need to stay at the hospital overnight. 

The doctor will follow up and discuss the results with you and go over any further treatment or tests that need to happen.
