Choosing Children’s National for Immunohematology Care
The Immunohematology Program at Children’s National Hospital features a collaboration between an immunologist and a hematologist to evaluate and care for children with complex medical conditions. Our immunologist studies and treats conditions of the immune system, while our hematologist specializes in treating conditions relating to blood and blood components, such as bone marrow. In addition, our team includes a nurse practitioner, a nurse coordinator, a geneticist or genetic counselor and more.
Over the past few decades, several inborn errors of immunity, as well as non-genetic syndromes, have been identified that result in problems with blood cells due to abnormalities in the immune system. Our streamlined approach to such complex medical problems reduces the already heavy burden placed on the children and families who are affected by these conditions.
What to Expect from Our Program
During a visit with the Immunohematology Program, your child will be evaluated by our comprehensive team of medical specialists at a single appointment. The team will then develop a care plan that may include laboratory (and genetic) testing. Working with your family, our team will determine the most appropriate treatment and follow-up plan for your child.
