Thank you for your interest in the Pharmacy Residency Programs at Children’s National! Our mission is to provide world-class training in a myriad of learning experiences centered on patient care and building on prior education to develop pharmacist practitioners with the knowledge, skills and abilities to provide exceptional care in pediatrics.

Our program has consistently excelled in nurturing exceptional clinical pharmacists who can thrive amidst unique opportunities and obstacles. We offer residents the opportunity to practice at the top of their license, see a wide variety of patient populations, gain hands-on code experience, obtain a teaching certificate and be part of a robust resiliency and mentorship program.

Residency Programs

At Children's National, we offer three distinct residency programs: a PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Residency, a PGY2 Pediatrics Pharmacy Residency and a PGY2 Pediatrics PSP Critical Care Residency.

Over 100 pharmacists have completed a residency at Children’s National since the start of the program in 1980. We are a participating member of the ASHP Residency Matching Program and all of our programs are accredited.

Division of Pharmacy

The Division of Pharmacy includes around 200 pediatric professionals for the preparation and distribution of therapeutic prescription services for patients at Children’s National, the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders of Northern Virginia and Children's National Montgomery County.

Pharmacy Residency PGY1

PGY1 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions.

Post-Graduate Year One

PGY2 Pediatrics Pharmacy Residency and PSP Critical Care Residency

The purpose of the PGY2 Pediatric Pharmacy Residency is to provide learning experiences centered on patient care and practice management that will enable residency graduates to pursue advanced clinical pharmacist and clinical specialist positions in pediatrics.

Post-Graduate Year Two

Children’s National is not recruiting a PGY2 Oncology pharmacy resident for the 2027-2028 residency class.

Residency Opportunities

Residency Resiliency and Mentorship

Residency Resiliency: Many pharmacy residents experience times of hardship through the day-to-day operations, projects and patient care experiences of residency. It is our duty to ensure the residents' wellbeing by prioritizing pharmacy wellbeing and resilience. The Residency Engagement Committee and pharmacy residents meet regularly for either onsite lectures that discuss communication, time management, coping with stress, burnout prevention, interview preparation and social events.

Mentorship Program: We also have a mentorship program for the pharmacy residents. At the beginning of the year, each resident is paired with a member of the clinical pharmacy team. The mentor/mentee meet at minimum after every rotation and for quarterly developments but are available to meet whenever the resident needs. This mentorship is there to help with the residents' personal and professional development.

Teaching Opportunities

We offer a teaching certificate through ASHP to further develop pedagogical skills. This is required for residents who have not yet completed a teaching certificate but is optional otherwise.

Each resident will provide a one-hour ACPE accredited continuing education (CE) program. The resident will be paired with a preceptor mentor but is afforded autonomy in the topics presented.

In addition to a formal CE, residents will be offered the opportunity to provide education to other pharmacists, pharmacy students and medical residents throughout the year. The Division of Pharmacy is affiliated with Howard University College of Pharmacy, University of Maryland School of Pharmacy, Virginia Commonwealth University and Shenandoah University College of Pharmacy.

Code Training Program

The Pharmacy Residency Acute Care Simulation Program was developed to address a need within the residency curriculum to provide more consistent exposure to resuscitation scenarios and to meet an ASHP nationally determined requirement for residents to “demonstrate understanding of the management of pediatric medical emergencies”. Residents will participate in didactic lectures as well as hands-on simulations.

The simulations provide an opportunity for pharmacy residents to practice hands-on skills and work through common pediatric emergencies in a psychologically safe setting. In the setting of medical emergencies, these simulations influence learners to act in accordance with the organization’s policies and procedures, apply appropriate medication therapy, accurately calculate doses and prepare medications, practice effective and confident communication amongst a multidisciplinary team and effectively anticipate needs.

In addition, residents will carry a code pager and respond to codes and traumas during weekday hours.
