Pediatrics and Medical Genetics Combined Residency Program
The Pediatric-Medical Genetics (GEN) Track is a unique opportunity offered by Children’s National Hospital in conjunction with the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) to complete a combined, four-year residency program in pediatrics and medical genetics. This program draws upon the strengths from both institutions to train physicians in pediatric medicine as well as in the diagnosis, management, and counseling of patients with genetic disorders. Participants gain broad experience in pediatrics, clinical and molecular genetics, metabolic diseases and cytogenetics.
The Combined Pediatrics-Medical Genetics Residency Program is unparalleled in several respects:
- It trains residents in one of the nation's most prestigious children's hospitals
- It exposes students to rare genetic disorders that might not be seen in a more typical medical genetics program
- It is one of the few programs that emphasizes clinical research

Our Curriculum
During the first year, GEN residents complete only general pediatric training that includes core pediatric rotations. Overall, their PL1 year is about 90% of what the categorical PL1s do, with no specialized rotations and no specific time in Genetics.
