Highlights of our lab include:

Cutting-edge technology. With 14 high-speed 3D motion capture cameras and three 2D video cameras to capture movement from every angle, 10 force plates to assess stability and explosive power and 16 surface electromyography (EMG) sensors to record muscle activity, we can assess numerous aspects of a child’s movement and create detailed reports to inform our treatment and performance recommendations.
Convenient care at an advanced facility. For your convenience, our multi-disciplinary team of biomechanists, engineers, orthopaedic surgeons, sports medicine physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, sports physical therapists, athletic trainers and other members of the sports medicine team at the Fight For Children Sports Medicine Center work together to provide comprehensive motion and gait analysis services at our state-of-the-art facility in downtown Silver Spring, Maryland designed specifically for children, adolescents and young adults. Our expert team uses the biomechanical data collected in the Sports Performance and Motion Analysis Lab to help propel your child to their peak performance level.
Comprehensive care. Through the use of cutting-edge technology, the Sports Performance and Motion Analysis Lab at the Fight For Children Sports Medicine Center offers sports motion analysis and clinical gait analysis.

Sports Motion Analysis

We offer sports performance motion analysis for young athletes with a desire to reduce their risk of injury or enhance their performance. Our team of biomechanists, engineers, sports medicine physicians, orthopaedic surgeons, sports physical therapists, athletic trainers and other members of the sports medicine team are dedicated to helping young athletes meet their goals related to injury prevention, return to sports after clearance from an injury and maximize their performance.

During this evaluation, we take an in-depth look at how young athletes perform sport-specific movements using state-of-the-art technology, such as advanced 2D video recording techniques, 3D motion capture technology, force plates and surface EMG sensors to analyze kinematic, kinetic and electromyographical features of their performance.

After an analysis is conducted in the lab, our team works to identify measures young athletes can take to reduce the risk of sports-related injuries or assess their efficiency in sport-related movements.

Clinical Gait Analysis

If your child has cerebral palsy, a neuromuscular diagnosis or any other gait abnormality, our physical therapists, biomechanists, engineers and orthopaedic surgeons will work together to assess your child’s walking patterns and develop a plan of care.

During this evaluation, we take an in-depth look at how your child walks with and/or without the use of assistive devices (walkers, crutches or special braces). We use state-of-the-art technology, such as advanced 2D video recording techniques, 3D motion capture technology, force plates and surface EMG sensors to analyze the kinematic, kinetic and electromyographical features of your child’s body movements while walking.

Once the analysis is complete the multidisciplinary team will review the analysis results and provide recommendations that may consist of surgery, physical therapy, medications or assistive devices.

The Fight for Children Sports Medicine Center is the only facility of its kind dedicated to kids in the Washington, D.C., region. It offers a full range of sports medicine programs specifically for the young athlete – from clinical care and top-of-the-line imaging to sports physical therapy, athletic training, and 3D motion capture and analysis.

Fox 5 Takes Field Trip to Our Center

The Fight For Children Sports Medicine Center services include pediatric and adolescent sports physical therapy and rehabilitation in a state-of-the-art gym, sports performance and injury prevention programs, sport-specific motion analysis for performance improvement and clinical gait analysis.

The Fight For Children Sports Medicine Center was made possible by a donation from Fight For Children, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to improve the lives of under-resourced children in the nation’s capital.
