Mikael Petrosyan named chief of General and Thoracic Surgery at Children's National Hospital
Children’s National Hospital has named Mikael Petrosyan, MD, MBA, FACS, FAAP, as chief of the division of General and Thoracic Surgery. Dr. Petrosyan succeeds Tim Kane, MD, FACS, FAAP, who now assumes the role of emeritus chief and will continue his dedicated work as a full-time faculty member.
A highly regarded pediatric surgeon, educator and advocate, Dr. Petrosyan has been a driving force behind innovation in minimally invasive surgery, trauma care and surgical education throughout his tenure at Children’s National. His clinical expertise is matched by a deep commitment to mentorship, public health and advancing the field of pediatric surgery.

As surgical director of Perioperative Services, Dr. Petrosyan led initiatives to improve operating room efficiency, expand the use of advanced surgical techniques and elevate the quality of care for children and families. As associate chief of the division and program director of the Pediatric Surgery Fellowship, he has been instrumental in strengthening training and mentorship programs, fostering an environment of academic rigor and clinical excellence.
Beyond the operating room, Dr. Petrosyan is a leading advocate for child health and safety. He provided critical insights into the increasing incidence of firearm-related injuries among children, emphasizing the need for policy-driven solutions and community engagement. He has also extensively published research in pediatric minimally invasive surgery, trauma and esophageal disorders. Findings from these studies have influenced national guidelines and clinical practice.
