This comprehensive non-employee training program offers an array of opportunities for individuals to gain invaluable hands-on experience and mentorship across various roles. Participants can choose from a wide range of roles tailored to their interests and career goals.
The program's curriculum allows individuals to explore the dynamic aspects of academic medicine, providing a realistic preview of the healthcare field. Participants engage in real-world assignments that involve:
- Conducting patient assessments
- Participating in research projects
- Shadowing healthcare professionals
- Rotating through different departments
- Receiving training in allied health professions
- Assisting in the assessment and treatment of patients with psychiatric or neurological conditions
- Gaining experience in healthcare administration
The program prepares students for diverse career paths by developing transferable skills such as critical thinking, communication and collaboration. Participants learn to adapt to various environments and work effectively in multidisciplinary teams, skills that are valuable in any profession. They are also exposed to different healthcare career paths, aiding them in making informed decisions about their future goals.
It's important to note that these assignments are unpaid, and participants are not eligible for Children's National benefits, unemployment benefits or workers' compensation. Nonetheless, the program offers a valuable learning experience that equips students with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in their chosen field.
The Special Category Program at Children's National also provides an opportunity for individuals who are already in professional roles to serve as non-employees within the organization. This allows professionals to contribute their expertise and skills to the hospital without being formally employed, offering a flexible and mutually beneficial arrangement. It enables individuals to maintain their current professional roles while also engaging with Children's National in a meaningful capacity, supporting the hospital's mission and goals.
