Pediatric Lyme Outcomes Study

Children’s National is looking for children to join the Pediatric Lyme Outcomes (PELO) Study. This study is to learn more about the symptoms of Lyme disease, how long they last and how people recover. To do this, we will compare children recently diagnosed with Lyme disease to children of a similar age who have never had Lyme disease.

Who is eligible to participate?

Children and teens may be eligible if they meet the following requirements:

Age Requirements

Participants must be between the ages of 5 to 17 years old.

Weight

Participants must weigh at least 37.5 pounds (17 kg) to participate in this study.

Diagnosis

Have either:

  • A diagnosis of Lyme disease that is untreated or was first treated within the past 60 days, or
  • No history of Lyme disease

What happens in the study?

The PELO Study will gather information about the child’s experience with Lyme disease and collect lab samples such as blood, urine and stool. It may help us to learn more about treating children with Lyme disease in the future.

Taking part in the study includes up to 5 visits to the Clinical Research Unit at Children’s National Main Hospital, located at 111 Michigan Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20010. Each visit will be between 90 minutes to 2 hours long. The study lasts for about 12 months.

During the study visits, the study team will perform a physical exam and ask questions about the child’s medical history. There will also be questionnaires about certain areas of health, including anxiety, depression, relationships, pain, mobility, tiredness and sleep. Your child will complete tests to measure their thinking abilities, motor skills, sensations (like hearing or feeling) and emotions.

The study team will collect blood samples to be stored for future testing. They may also ask to collect urine or stool samples.

Compensation will be provided for completed visits.
