About Our Complex Care Program

The Complex Care Program at Children's National Hospital serves as a primary medical home for children with complex care needs, providing the support and resources each family needs as they care for their child. We have compiled this list of camp programs below to help you as you navigate recreational plans for your child.

HSCSN Recipients

Make good use of your time out of school with the Health Services for Children with Special Needs, Inc. (HSCSN) Summer Programs. HSCSN can help you enroll in summer camps. Summer camps are helpful and fun! Camps focus on socialization, recreation, self-care, fitness, education, training, or other skills and education. To find out if your summer camps are covered, follow the steps below:

  • Step One: Call Customer Care at 202-467-2737. Customer Care will assist you through the application process.
  • Step Two: Fill out the Summer Program Request Form with your doctor. Send the form to HSCSN.
  • Step Three: Receive an approval letter from HSCSN.
  • Step Four: Enjoy your summer camp!


Maryland

Prince George’s County

The Department of Parks and Recreation encourages and supports the participation of individuals with disabilities. Register at least a minimum of two weeks in advance of the program start date to request and receive a disability accommodation. For information about disability supports and modifications, call your area Program Access Office.

Registration is simple and flexible. Before you can register for summer day camps or summer playgrounds/teen centers you must first set up a free ParksDirect account.

Montgomery County

Therapeutic Recreation (TR) camps are designed specifically for individuals with disabilities and focus on campers’ unique abilities. TR camps are facilitated by trained staff who provide highly structured adapted activities. TR camps generally have a one staff to four participant ratio. To be successful, camper must be able to follow one/two-step directions, manage their behavior and make simple choices. Campers must exhibit ability for self-care with limited assistance and must be toilet trained. No personal care.

Charles County

Charles County Therapeutic Recreation offers recreational opportunities to individuals with special needs. They strive to meet the needs of individuals with various disabilities or limitations. The programs focus on skill development, socialization and enhancing the quality of each individual’s life through play. For questions related to these programs, please call 301-932-3470.

Virginia

Fairfax County

Fairfax County offers several summer camp options for children and youth, including Camp Fairfax, Park Authority Camps, and Therapeutic Recreation Services. Learn more about each below.

Camp Fairfax

Registration has staggered enrollment dates in 2024:

  • Beginning Tuesday, March 12: Enrollment for sites beginning with letters B – E (Braddock ES – Eagle View ES)
  • Beginning Wednesday March 13: Enrollment for sites beginning with letters G – K (Graham Road ES – Kings Glen ES)
  • Beginning Thursday, March 14: Enrollment for sites beginning with letters L – T (Lake Anne ES – Terraset ES)
  • Beginning Friday, March 15: Enrollment for sites beginning with letters V – W (Vienna ES – Wolftrap ES)

Fairfax County Park Authority

Registration for Park Authority camps is open. 

Therapeutic Recreation Services

Therapeutic Recreation Services provides opportunities for children and adults with disabilities to develop the skills that enable them to participate in the recreation and leisure programs of their choice. Staff is committed to providing services, education, and resources to meet the needs of participants and assist them on the road toward lifelong participation and enjoyment in recreation and leisure activities. Staff also provides support and advocacy to individuals who wish to participate in general recreation activities.

Arlington County

Therapeutic recreation adapted summer camps are designed for individuals with disabilities, ages 6-21. They are recommended for campers who benefit from close supervision and moderate to maximum support with personal care, recreation participation and/or social engagement.

Alexandria

How to Register

  • Online
    • Payment by credit card (Visa/MasterCard) or eCheck
    • If you have previously registered in an activity, program, class or camp, you can register online by using your Recreation Department Household ID number (user name). If you do not know your Household ID number, call 703-746-5414 or email recreation staff for assistance. If an email is on file, you can recover your username and password by selecting "forgot your password."
    • New customers can create a new account by selecting the "New User, Create an Account" link on the online registration web page.
  • Walk-In
    • Complete all information on the registration form including signature and bring to the Registration and Reservation Office, Lee Center, 1108 Jefferson St., Alexandria, VA 22314
    • Payment by credit card (Visa/MasterCard), cash, money order, or check payable to "City of Alexandria"
  • Mail-In
    • Mail completed registration forms to the Registration and Reservation Office, Lee Center, 1108 Jefferson St., Alexandria, VA 22314
    • Payment by check payable to "City of Alexandria"
    • Mail-in registration takes at least 5 days to process. Mail-in registration does not guarantee placement in a class.

Therapeutic Recreation Services

Online registration is not available for Therapeutic Recreation programs. Please contact the Therapeutic Recreation office at 703-746-5535 for more information and to determine whether the Therapeutic Recreation programs are right for you or a family member. School-aged youth and teens are required to have an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or 504 Plan. All programs require an initial assessment and eligibility approval by Therapeutic Recreation staff prior to participation in programs.

City of Alexandria programs, services and facilities are available to all residents regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability. The City of Alexandria complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) for qualified individuals. To request ADA accommodation, call 703-746-5422 or VA Relay 711 two weeks prior to an event, activity, or registration deadline. The Department of Recreation, Parks, and Cultural Activities will attempt to meet requests for written material in alternative formats, including braille, within 10 days of request.
