Research
Fellows actively engage in research throughout the one-year fellowship and are encouraged to submit their work for presentation at the national American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (AAPOS) meeting. Collectively, fellows have authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications in pediatric ophthalmology based on projects developed during their training.
At Children’s National, a strong culture of collaboration fosters multidisciplinary research, with many projects developed in partnership with other specialties to advance the understanding and treatment of pediatric conditions.
We maintain active research initiatives in retinopathy of prematurity, pediatric glaucoma, papilledema and a wide range of additional pediatric ophthalmology topics.
Our dedicated research coordinator, Aya Bourdi, provides essential support with IRB submissions, consent processes and overall project organization.
Fellows work closely with a robust and collaborative research team that includes undergraduate students, medical students, residents, nurses, fellows, and attending physicians. In this role, fellows help supervise team members and play a central part in driving project execution.
