Gustavo Nino, MD, MS, MBA, appointed chief of Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine

Children’s National Hospital names new chief of Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine to lead clinical and research innovation

Children’s National Hospital has appointed Gustavo Nino, MD, MS, MBA, as chief of the Division of Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine. He assumes the role after serving as interim chief since July 2025. “I am honored to step into this role and build on the division’s strong foundation,” Dr. Nino said. “I look forward to advancing innovation and continuing to provide exceptional care to the children and families we serve alongside a talented team of clinicians.”

Dr. Nino received his medical degree from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia in Bogotá, Colombia, and completed his residency at Maimonides Infants and Children’s Hospital in Brooklyn, NY. He went on to complete fellowship training in pulmonology and sleep medicine at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania. After beginning his academic career as pediatric pulmonary and sleep medicine faculty at Pennsylvania State University, he joined Children’s National in 2012.

In 2015, Dr. Nino was named the director of Sleep Medicine and in 2023, associate chief of academic affairs for the Division of Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine. That same year, he earned his Master of Business Administration and was promoted to tenured professor of Pediatrics and Genomics at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, reflecting his commitment to medical education and mentorship. Today, he has trained more than 40 mentees.

As an internationally recognized expert, Dr. Nino has authored more than 130 peer-reviewed publications and received the 2019 Robert Mellins Outstanding Achievement Award in Pediatric Pulmonology from the American Thoracic Society, the Pediatric Assembly’s highest mid-career honor. He has contributed extensively to leading organizations – including the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, American Lung Association, European Respiratory Society, and the National Institutes of Health – as a speaker, advisor and recognized leader.

Dr. Nino’s research focuses on airway responses to viral infections in infants, particularly those born prematurely or with trisomy 21, and the link between respiratory illness and pediatric obstructive sleep apnea. His work also explores the use of artificial intelligence to analyze respiratory and sleep data, advancing prevision medicine in pediatrics.
