Children's National Hospital leader inducted into the 2020 class of American Academy of Nursing fellows

Mary Anne Hillard
Each year the American Academy of Nursing (AAN) recognizes nurse leaders from all over the world for their outstanding contributions to nursing and health care. This year the AAN has selected Mary Anne Hilliard, Esq., R.N., CPHRM, executive vice president and general counsel at Children's National Hospital, to join the class of 2020 Academy fellows. Hilliard joins more than 2,900 fellows at the Academy, including seven other nurse leaders from Children's National who previously were given this prestigious fellowship.

At Children's National, Hilliard oversees legal services, risk management, compliance, internal audit, insurance, workers' compensation and captive management, but began her career here as a registered nurse. With a combined nursing and legal background, Hilliard strives to advance health care safety and has led many local and national grant-funded initiatives to share risk data and study pediatric outcomes to reduce serious adverse events.

"At Children's National, nurses partner in the decision-making, implementation and evaluation of the art and science of patient care. This accomplishment exemplifies Mary Anne’s outstanding work as a health care leader and her dedication to excellence on a national level," says Kathleen Gorman M.S.N., R.N., FAAN, executive vice president for Patient Care Services and chief operating officer at Children's National. "We are so proud to see her being honored for her passion and tireless commitment to advocate for children."

Hilliard joins exceptional nurse leaders around the globe who are transforming health care.

The AAN held a virtual induction ceremony for the new class of fellows on Oct. 31 at the 2020 Virtual Policy Conference - In Crisis and Calm: Leading with Purpose.
