Children's National Health System Named a 2016 Leapfrog Group Top Hospital

Washington, DC – Children’s National has been designated a Leapfrog Group 2016 Top Hospital, the only children’s hospital in the Northeastern United States to be named to this prestigious list and the only hospital recognized in Washington, DC. The Top Hospital distinction is conveyed on hospitals that have lower infection rates, higher survival rates for high-risk procedures, decreased lengths of stay and fewer readmissions.

“Delivering better outcomes and safer care for patients is our top priority at Children’s National,” says Kurt Newman, MD, President and CEO. “We’re pleased to again be recognized by Leapfrog Group. This validates the work we do every day to keep our kids safe and ensure they get the highest quality care possible."

Children’s National was one of only nine pediatric facilities nationally to be awarded a Top Children’s Hospital designation. Top Hospitals are selected based on the results of the Leapfrog Group’s annual hospital survey, which measures hospitals’ performance across many areas of hospital care including critical measures like preventing medication errors and maintaining appropriate staffing levels to ensure the delivery of quality medical care. In the 11 years that Leapfrog has been recognizing hospitals, Children’s National is one of only two pediatric hospitals to have received this honor eight times.

“Being acknowledged as a Top Hospital is an incredible feat achieved by less than three percent of hospitals nationwide,” notes Leah Binder, President and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “With this honor, Children’s National has established its commitment to safer and higher quality care. Providing this level of care to patients in Washington, DC, requires motivation and drive from every team member. I congratulate the board, staff, and clinicians whose efforts made this honor possible.”

Providing care to more than 218,000 patients annually, Children’s National is dedicated to improving the lives of all children through innovative research, high quality healthcare, and advocacy on behalf of children’s needs. In addition to being named a 2016 Leapfrog Group Top Hospital, Children’s National is a Magnet® designated hospital, recognized for nursing excellence by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, and is one of only four pediatric hospitals in the country to have been ranked in the top 20 in every one of the 10 specialty areas rated by U.S. News & World Report.
