Children’s National Trauma Center Receives Highest Verification From American College Of Surgeons

Washington, DC—Children’s National Medical Center has been verified as a Level I Pediatric Trauma Center by the Committee on Trauma of the American College of Surgeons (ACS). This verification recognizes the Children’s National Medical Center team’s dedication to providing optimal care for injured children throughout the Washington DC region.
“The process for verification is rigorous and underscores our commitment to providing the most advanced care to children in the Washington region and beyond,” said Randall Burd, MD, PhD, Chief of the Division of Trauma and Burn Services at Children’s National. “We pride ourselves on our collaborative approach to providing the best care to children who need our specialized trauma services.
The Verification Review Committee on Trauma of the ACS reported that Children’s National is committed to the care of trauma patients through services that include orthopaedics, neurosurgery, emergency medicine, radiology, and anesthesiology. The committee noted Children’s Performance Improvement process for advancing trauma care and implementing evidence-based practice.
Dr. Burd leads the Emergency Trauma and Burn Services Division, a 12-member acute response team representing surgery, emergency medicine, nursing, surgical specialists, and social work, to provide immediate intervention when a critically injured or burned child arrives at Children’s. Children’s National is the only acute care hospital in the region dedicated solely to children.
Established by ACS in 1987, the Verification/Consultation Program for Hospitals promotes the development of trauma centers in which participants provide not only the hospital resources necessary for trauma care, but also the entire spectrum of care to address the needs of all injured patients. This spectrum encompasses the prehospital phase through the rehabilitation process. Children’s National Medical Center has been verified by the ACS continuously for more than 20 years.
