Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship

Our fellowship is one of the most established in the nation, one of the first eight pediatric specific ultrasound fellowships. Our faculty have been leaders in the field for more than a decade, teaching POCUS nationally and internationally. Our program has excellent relationships with other divisions in the hospital- affording opportunities to learn and teach other disciplines (Cardiology, Radiology and Hospitalist Medicine).

Our fellowship is a unique partnership that collaborates closely with the Adult Emergency Medicine Ultrasound Fellowship at George Washington University (GWU) Hospital. We have a robust global health program both at Children’s National and GWU, with fellows having the opportunity to teach in resource limited settings (specifically India and Nicaragua in the past).

Graduates of our program will be proficient in the following four domains:

• Clinical scanning, in the full complement of point of care ultrasound applications in the emergency department
• Education, with ample opportunity to teach core skills and procedures to a varied group of learners, including but not limited to graduate medical students, residents, fellows and faculty
• Research, driving the field forward through independent scholarly investigation in areas such as clinical research, quality improvement and medical education
• Administration, poised to be future leaders in the field with the knowledge to establish a program- including but not limited to understanding quality assurance, hardware and information technology issues, billing and credentialing

The fellow will be trained in pediatric and adult emergency ultrasound applications; however, the focus will be pediatric with a large portion of scanning done at Children's National. The ultrasound fellow will participate in weekly scanning shifts, quality assurance review of images, monthly journal club, didactics and have multiple opportunities to teach. During the fellowship, the fellow will work clinically as a faculty member in our pediatric emergency departments at Children's National and United Medical Center in Washington, D.C. The Ultrasound Fellow will also scan at the adult emergency department at George Washington University Hospital, with ED POCUS faculty.

Children’s National Hospital, located in the nation’s capital, serves as the primary site for training. It is a free-standing, tertiary care children’s hospital with a Level I trauma center. We have an annual census of 120,000 patients between the two campuses, seeing a very diverse patient population and spectrum of illness. Our staff include 50 pediatric emergency medicine faculty, and additional cohort of pediatric associates, physician assistants and nurse practitioners.

Washington, D.C. is a wonderful place to live, with all the seasons, and easy access to hiking, biking, skiing on the mountains and relaxing at the beach. The culture of the area is fun and easy going, with excellent restaurants and loads of cultural goings on, and free access to world class museums. There are 3 airports to take you anywhere you’d like to go.

Board-certified or eligible pediatric emergency medicine physicians and pediatricians may apply. We participate in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), and accept applications through the Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship website.
