Children's National Health System Named a 2015 Leapfrog Group Top Hospital

One of only 12 children's hospitals recognized

Washington, DC – Children’s National Health System has been designated a Leapfrog Group 2015 Top Hospital, one of only 12 children’s hospitals in the United States to be named to this prestigious list. Top Hospitals exhibit lower infection rates, higher survival rates for high-risk procedures, decreased length of stay, and fewer readmissions.

“Being part of the 2015 Leapfrog Group Top Hospital List is recognition of the incredible dedication of everyone on the Children’s National team to providing the highest quality care to our patients,” said Kurt Newman, MD, President and CEO. “I’m proud that our commitment to placing the child at the center of all we do has resulted in this important and meaningful distinction.”

The Top Hospital List selection is based on the results of The Leapfrog Group’s annual hospital survey, which measures hospitals’ performance on patient safety and quality, focusing on three critical areas of hospital care:

  • How patients fare
  • Resource use
  • Management structures established to prevent errors.

Performance across many areas of hospital care is considered when establishing the qualifications for the award, including survival rates for high-risk procedures and a hospital’s ability to prevent medication errors. The complete list of top hospitals, the survey methodology, and more detail about criteria can be found at

“Leapfrog’s Top Hospital award is widely acknowledged as one of the most prestigious distinctions any hospital can achieve in the United States,” said Leah Binder, President and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “Top Hospitals have lower infection rates, better outcomes, decreased length of stay and fewer readmissions. By achieving Top Hospital status, Children’s National has proven it prioritizes the safety of its patients, is committed to transparency, and provides exemplary care for families and patients in Washington, DC. I congratulate the board, staff, and clinicians of Children’s National whose efforts achieved these results.”

Children’s National, based in Washington, DC, is an integrated health system that provides care to more than 219,000 patients annually. It is one of only five pediatric hospitals in the United States this year to achieve these three nationally recognized honors: U.S. News & World Report’s Best Children’s Hospitals Honor Roll, Magnet® designation, and now the Leapfrog Group’s Top Hospital List.
