United in providing high quality pediatric healthcare, education and research, Children’s National, the Sheikh Zayed Institute and the United Arab Emirates have been working together to treat Emirati patients, forge new partnerships, host and teach students and physicians and conduct research and development.

  • His Highness Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, invited Dr. Kurt Newman, Children’s National President and Chief Executive Officer, to speak at a Ramadan majlis at Al Bateen palace on 6 August 2012. Dr. Kurt spoke about a new vision for children’s medicine through the innovative work being done at the Sheikh Zayed Institute.

  • His Highness Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of Culture, Youth, and Social Development, with Dr. Kevin Cleary, Lead Principal Investigator for Bioengineering at the Sheikh Zayed Institute, during a tour of Children’s National in August 2014. Dr. Kevin highlighted the 3D printing initiatives that are improving pediatric surgery and might soon produce biocompatible structures that can be implanted and replace damaged tissues.

  • His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nayhan hears an update on the latest Sheikh Zayed Institute technologies from Dr. Peter Kim, Vice President of the Sheikh Zayed Institute. Dr. Peter demonstrates the High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU), which will provide a non-invasive method to treat inoperable tumors in children.
  • HE Sultan Bin Saeed Al Mansoori, UAE Minister of Economy, hosts Drs. Kevin Cleary and Marius Linguraru of the Sheikh Zayed Institute and Pam King Sams of Children’s National at his offices in Dubai in November 2014. The Children’s National delegation presented the Minister with a piece of artwork by one of the hospital’s patients as a thank you for the generous support from the people of the UAE.
  • HE Abdul Al Owais, UAE Minister of Health, met with a Children’s National delegation during the Arab Health Conference in Dubai in January 2015. The group discussed ongoing joint research projects and future collaborations on health innovation for children.
  • HE Dr. Amal Abdullah Juma Al Qubaisi, Director General of the Abu Dhabi Education Council and member of the UAE Federal National Council, and a delegation from the UAE toured the Sheikh Zayed Institute in June 2013. The group visited with the 2013 Student Innovators and saw the students, including Zainab Moazzam of Khalifa University, in action in the lab.
  • HE Dr. Amal Abdullah Juma Al Qubaisi, Director General of the Abu Dhabi Education Council and member of the UAE Federal National Council, and a delegation from the UAE visited Children’s National in June 2013. They received an update on the hospital’s art therapy programs and toured the Sheikh Zayed Institute.
  • HE Falah Al Ahbabi, General Manager of Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council, met with Dr. Kurt Newman, Children’s National President and CEO, and Jim Lintott, Children’s National Chairman of the Board, to discuss the importance of providing sufficient high-quality pediatric care for children in Abu Dhabi.   • Children’s National was honored to participate in the launch of the Health Authority Abu Dhabi’s Enaya campaign for maternal and child health in November 2013. Drs. Dorothy Bulas, Brendan Lanpher, Marshall Summar, Gerard Martin, and Adre Du Plessis spoke as part of the continuing medical education seminars. They are pictured here with Dr. Jennifer Moore of HAAD.
  • Leadership from the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA) received an update from Dr. Gerard Martin on Children’s National’s on-site simulation and training facility for cardiac intensive care during their visit to Washington, DC, on 20 September 2013.
  • Dr. Brian Jacobs, Children’s National Chief Information Officer and Chief Medical Information Officer, presented on Health Information Technology before the Abu Dhabi Health Services (SEHA) Research Conference in December 2013.
  • Drs. Noura Al Dhaheri and Fatima Al Dhaheri, graduates of UAE University College of Medicine and Health Science, visit with Dr. Mary Ottolini and Dr. Craig Peters of Children’s National. Drs. Noura and Fatima were accepted into the prestigious Children’s National Pediatric Residency Program, and Dr. Noura was the first Emirati graduate of the program in June 2015. Dr. Fatima is scheduled to graduate in June 2017.

  • A Sharjah delegation tours the Sheikh Zayed Institute at Children’s National during an October 2013 visit to Washington, DC.
  • Lt. Gen. HE Mohammed Al Kaabi, Chairman of the Board of the Armed Forces Officers Club, receives an update on Children’s National’s kidney transplant program from Dr. Kanwal Kher, Chief of the Division of Nephrology. The visit was part of the UAE Healthy Kidney 10K and Zayed Marathon events in May 2015.
  • Lt. Gen. HE Mohammed Al Kaabi, Chairman of the Board of the Armed Forces Officers Club, and Pam King Sams, Children’s National Chief Development Officer, with Children’s National mascot Dr. Bear at the UAE Healthy Kidney 10K race on May 30, 2015.
  • UAE artists, part of the Past Forward touring exhibition of Emirati art, hosted a workshop for children at the hospital, including Dana, one of our UAE patients. Art therapy is an important part of treatment and recovery for children. May 2014.
  • Dr. Naoufel Werghi, Associate Professor at Khalifa University, and Dr. Marius Linguraru, Principal Investigator for Bioengineering at the Sheikh Zayed Institute, work on joint research for early detection of genetic syndromes. Faculty exchanges and knowledge sharing are an important part of the partnership between Children’s National and the UAE.

  • Sara Abdulla, 2014 Sheikh Zayed Institute Student Innovator, works with her team to develop a new digital monitoring tool for the neonatal intensive care unit at Children’s National.
  • “Knowledge is limitless and it keeps evolving day by day.” Shatha Al Wahhabi of Khalifa University was accepted to the 2013 and 2014 classes of Sheikh Zayed Institute Student Innovators. Her research focused on immunology and neonatology projects.
  • HE Omar Al Shamsi, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates in the United States, spoke at the 2013 Sheikh Zayed Institute International Symposium. During the event, he met with the 2013 class of Sheikh Zayed Institute Student Innovators from Khalifa University.
