A Day in the Life of a Resident

6 a.m. - 8 a.m. Pre-rounding: After getting sign-out from the overnight team, a resident starts pre-rounding on his or her patients. Residents complete their daily notes using our Electronic Medical Record. Each resident pre-rounds on a maximum of 10 patients.

7:30 a.m. – 8 a.m. Morning Report: Every Tuesday and Thursday a senior resident leads Morning Report, an interactive case based presentation.

8 a.m. - 8:30 a.m. Attending /Fellow Teaching Rounds (3 - 4 times a week): Inpatient teams have implemented morning or afternoon teaching sessions.

8:30 a.m. – 11 a.m. Work Rounds: We follow the model of patient-centered care and family-centered rounds. The patient’s family, nurse, social worker, case manager and dietician are an integral part of daily rounds.

11 a.m. - 12 p.m. Patient Care: The remainder of the morning is spent calling consults, placing orders, reassessing patients and acting on the plan for the day.

12 p.m. - 1 p.m. Noon Conference (daily): Noon conference speakers emphasize group participation and self-directed learning. The noon conference schedule is Monday and Tuesday Didactic Conferences, Wellness Wednesday Conferences,Thursday Professorial Rounds and Friday Board Review.

1 p.m. - 5 p.m. Patient Care or Continuity Clinic: Interns continue patient care on the Neurology floor. Once weekly, each resident will spend their afternoon in continuity clinic. Residents have a wide range of continuity clinic options from which to choose, depending upon their track.

5 p.m. Sign-out to Night Team: A daytime resident signs out his patients to the night float resident. Our night float system has been in place for years, and is one of the reasons why our average number of hours worked per week is less than 60!
