|Children’s National Medical Center First Medical Institution Awarded Washington, DC, Mayor’s Sustainability Award

Washington, DC – Yesterday evening, Children’s National Medical Center became the first medical institution in Washington, DC, to be presented the Mayor’s Sustainability Award for demonstrating outstanding achievements and leadership in sustainable practices.
Since 2009, the Mayor’s Sustainability Awards (previously the Mayor’s Environmental Excellence Awards) have been awarded through a competitive selection process. This year’s nine winners represented a variety of efforts to improve the District’s residential life, the quality of our environment, and access to healthy and affordable food and housing.
“We take a comprehensive approach to environmental sustainability,” stated Ekaterina A. Solovieva, Manager of Sustainability and Quality Improvement. “From waste reduction and recycling to our hydroplants and children’s garden, Children’s National seeks to match our sustainability programming with how we can best improve our patients’ quality of life, satisfaction, and outcomes.”
Children’s National incorporates environmental sustainability into daily operations in all of its 30 locations in Washington, DC, and around the beltway. By providing children with access to gardens and nature, Children’s believes it will help improve their healing process, and has a vision to build rooftop healing gardens in its facilities. Children’s National is undertaking a comprehensive approach to sustainability by focusing on environmentally preferred purchasing, energy and water conservation, healthy eating, providing recycling at all facilities, and managing pharmaceuticals to keep chemicals out of landfills and waterways.
