Children’s National Receives Accreditation for Imaging Services
June 6, 2012

Washington, DC—Children’s National Medical Center has been awarded a three-year term of accreditation for its imaging services as the result of a recent review by the American College of Radiology (ACR). The award covers MRI, ultrasound, CT, and nuclear medicine, all part of the Division of Diagnostic Imaging and Radiology

Attaining the ACR Gold Seal of Accreditation is an arduous process that involves submission of physician and staff credentials, safety policies, detailed quality assurance records for each scanner, radiation dose calibrations for the ionizing radiation-producing scanners, and multiple samples of actual clinical images from each scanner.

“We’re honored to be a part of an elite group of providers to receive this distinction for safety and quality of our imaging facilities,” said Raymond Sze, MD, Chief of Diagnostic Imaging and Radiology. “We have a longstanding commitment to safety, which is particularly important for children and their developing systems.”

Children’s National MRI equipment is state-of-the-art and includes a wide bore 1.5 Tesla MRI scanner with a larger opening to help make patients more comfortable and a 3 Tesla (3T) MRI , the gold standard for both functional brain imaging and musculoskeletal exams. Children’s National CT equipment has dose-reduction capabilities, and a team of pediatric radiologists who ensure the lowest possible radiation dose (exposure) is used for all patients.

Children’s National has two facilities with imaging services to meet the needs of children and families. In November, Children’s opened a new facility in Rockville, Md., bringing state-of-the-art imaging closer to families in Maryland and Virginia.

The ACR is a national professional organization serving more than 34,000 diagnostic/interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists, nuclear medicine physicians, and medical physicists with programs focusing on the practice of medical imaging and radiation oncology and the delivery of comprehensive healthcare services.
