Children's National, Mayor Bowser and DC Public Library Host Books From Birth Program Launch Event
The DC Public Library and Mayor Bowser launched the Books from Birth program on February 4, 2016, at an event hosted at Children’s National. The early literacy initiative will provide a free book each month by mail to every child under age five in the District in order to get more parents to read with their children and get their children ready to start school. Children’s National President and CEO Kurt Newman, M.D., Mayor Muriel Bowser, and Councilmembers Charles Allen and David Grosso gave speeches on the importance of literacy during a child’s earliest years. Mayor Bowser and Councilmember Allen ended the event by reading a children’s book to a group of children in the audience.
