Christena had severe asthma as a child. “My mother always took me to Children’s National Hospital for care,” she recalls, “so I could get on with being a kid.”

Today, Christena brings her own children to our Anacostia location. Nurse practitioner Dr. Nadine Camp has overseen her daughter Dajasha’s care for her entire life. “When we found out that Dajasha had a rare case of alopecia, Nadine helped me understand everything. She answered all of my daughter’s questions and helped her feel better about her condition,” Christena says. “She has always cheered my kids on and makes sure they understand the importance of their health and education.”

When Dajasha had a seizure, Christena called Dr. Camp. “I thought she was going to die,” Christena says. “But Nadine told me to take her to the hospital and that she would be OK. Dr. Camp was right. Her reassurance throughout eased my stress.” The seizure had been caused by a fever.

When Dajasha had what her mother suspected was an asthma attack, Dr. Camp responded immediately. She provided advice and connected the family with our IMPACT DC Asthma Clinic. They confirmed the asthma diagnosis, investigated potential environmental triggers and created an action plan. Dajasha’s school nurse, Egypt Middleton, one of our dedicated nurses who staff D.C. schools, ensures that Dajasha gets her weekday medications on time.

“Thanks to care from Children’s National, Dajasha is back to being happy and healthy,” her mother says. “She’s always on the go — talking, moving and exploring, just like a kid should be. Nadine has made a huge difference in her life.”
