Research Interests
Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC has a unique subspecialty service, the pediatric Neuro ICU. We have 3 dedicated neurologists who are assigned to round daily in the ICU and co-manage patients with the critical care medicine team. The current model was designed by my mentor, Steven Weinstein in 2000 and has evolved significantly over the years. Currently the service includes neurology, critical care medicine, neurosurgery, neuroradiology, interventional radiology and physical medicine and rehabilitation. The service is comprehensive and aims to improve clinical care as well as provide a platform for clinical research. There is a continuum of care that begins upon entry to the hospital and extends to the outpatient community. We have standardized care and have over 15 care sets for various NeuroICU diagnoses. We provide ongoing education for physicians and nurses on our team and participate in several clinical research projects with other institutions (e.g. pSERG, PCCEG, THAPCA). This applicant also directs the pediatric stroke program at Children's National and is interested in perinatal infarcts. The program participates in multicenter trials including the International Pediatric Stroke Study (IPSS), Vasculopathy and infection in Pediatric Stroke (VIPS) and several sickle cell trials including TWITCH, SWITCH and SITT. The clinical services and research interests of the stroke program have significant overlap with the NeuroICU program. My goal is to improve clinical care with our subspecialty services as well as contribute to the advancement of various treatments for acute neurological diagnosis through clinical research.
