Research Interests
Richard Jonas, MD, is the chief of Cardiac Surgery at Children's National Medical Center and co-director of the Children's National Heart Institute. He is professor of Surgery at George Washington University. Dr. Jonas joined the staff of Children's National Medical Center in 2004. He had previously been chief of Cardiac Surgery at Children's Hospital in Boston and the Ladd Professor of Child Surgery at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Jonas completed his medical school training in Australia and undertook fellowships in Australia, New Zealand, and Boston. Dr. Jonas's research goal is to maximize intellectual development and minimize neurological injury associated with the repair of congenital heart anomalies. His approach is translational in nature beginning in the laboratory with a piglet model of cardiopulmonary bypass and more recently fetal neuronal cell culture. Endpoints have included magnetic resonance spectroscopy, near infrared spectroscopy, and intravital microscopy which allows direct examination of the cerebral microvasculature. Results of these laboratory studies have led to prospective randomized clinical trials, three of which have had positive outcomes and have led to worldwide changes in the technique of cardiopulmonary bypass as applied to pediatric cardiac surgery. Dr. Jonas has personally authored one textbook and edited or co-authored three others. He has published over 290 original articles, 30 book chapters, and numerous abstracts and editorials.
