Research Interests
Molly Huntsman's research emphasizes disorders that exhibit imbalances in neuronal excitability, particularly the autism spectrum disorder known as Fragile X Syndrome (FXS) and also epilepsy. Her long-term research goal is to determine the role of inhibitory interneurons in the pathophysiological process of neurodevelopmental disorders.

As a graduate student Dr. Huntsman studied the effects of sensory deprivation on GABAA inhibitory neurotransmitter receptor subunit mRNA expression. As a postdoctoral fellow she learned clamp electrophysiology and studied Angelman’s Syndrome. Huntsman's independent laboratory is a mixture of these two training and research disciplines. Her laboratory has produced publications on the topic of inhibitory neuron function in sensory processing and synaptic plasticity, including the plasticity of disease. She is independently funded as the principal investigator and co-principal investigator of two NIH-funded grants and awards from Autism Speaks and the FRAXA-Fragile X Research Foundation.
