Research Interests
Essential hypertension affects 25 percent of the adult population and is caused by an interaction of genetic and environmental factors, such as salt intake. Thus, the major challenge in hypertension research is first to identify the underlying mechanisms, especially the genetic causes. Dr. Wang has found that G protein-coupled receptor kinase (GRK) 4 is a master blood pressure control gene via regulating the expression and function of angiotensin II type 1 receptor and dopamine receptor D1. The GRK4 variant A142V produces hypertension regardless of salt intake and A486V causes blood pressure increase when high salt diet is taken. Using microarray techniques, Dr. Wang identified several other genes whose expression levels are correlated with salt-sensitivity in different genetic backgrounds.
