Research Interests
Dr. Jerebtsova's research interests include molecular mechanisms of renal function in normal kidney and in renal diseases. During her PhD training she studied the biophysical and molecular mechanisms of renal tubular filtration. Later she received intensive training in immunotherapy, gene therapy and HIV-1 pathogenesis.
Recently she has been focusing on the role of circulating viral and host factors in the development of HIV-associated nephropathy (HIVAN). African American children infected with HIV-1 virus are at high risk of developing an HIV-associated nephropathy that is characterized by large urinary protein losses and rapid progression to chronic renal failure. The basic mechanism of HIV-1 induced renal injury is not clearly understood. Soluble circulating factors from both the host and the virus may play an important role in the disease progression.
Jerebtsova's research focuses on two specific areas: investigating the role of circulating factors in the progression of HIVAN, and the elucidation of the molecular mechanisms involved in the glomerular injury using immortalized cells from HIVAN patients. She is also studying a novel disease mechanism and treatment of intestinal bleeding complications induced by heparin-like drug in synergy with angiogenic growth factors.
