Research Interests
The appearance of a limiting (plasma) membrane around the protoplasm of a prospective cell is a key feature of cell development and formation. This membrane is also vital to cells maintaining their individual autonomy. Multi-cellular organisms, including humans, require individual cell interaction together, but while maintaining the integrity of the individual cell. The plasma membrane allows for both these functions at the same time. Fusion of vesicles, or tiny membranous sacs, with the cell membrane allows lipids, proteins, and small molecules to travel to and across each cell’s plasma membrane. This fortifies the integrity of plasma membrane and still allows interaction with the environment and the neighboring cells. Jaiswal Jyoti, MSc, PhD, and his team employ live-cell imaging and 'omics'-based approaches to study individual cells, vesicles, and molecules to identify the mechanisms through which the body’s cells maintain their integrity while still efficiently communicating with neighbor cells (intracellular trafficking). These studies help the team better understand the degenerative diseases that are associated with defects in intracellular trafficking. Ultimately, these mechanisms may lead to therapeutic approaches for treating these disorders.
