Research Interests
The main focus of Dr. Bukrinsky's laboratory is analysis of the effects of HIV infection on cholesterol metabolism. Specifically, we are interested in the molecular mechanisms behind the impairment of the activity of ABCA1, the main cellular cholesterol transporter, by HIV-1 protein Nef. We also perform a clinical study with HIV-infected subjects, using mass spectrometry to characterize the longitudinal changes in HDL proteome that may be related to increased risk of atherosclerosis in these patients. Another HIV-related project in the lab is analysis of host cell factors associated with the viral pre-integration complex. These factors assist or restrict viral reverse transcription and nuclear import, and may represent new targets for anti-HIV therapeutic approaches. Finally, a long-term interest of Dr. Bukrinsky's laboratory is a new pro-inflammatory factor, extracellular cyclophilin, and its role in various diseases such as lung inflammation, rheumatoid arthritis, and atherosclerosis. His lab also investigates the molecular events associated with cyclophilin-induced cell activation and test anti-cyclophilin drugs as therapeutic approach in inflammatory diseases.
