Research Interests
Cynthia Tifft, MD, PhD, an internationally recognized expert in the care of children with Tay-Sachs disease and related disorders, is chief of the Division of Genetics & Metabolism at Children’s National Medical Center and director of the regional center for lysosomal storage disorders. Dr. Tifft joined the staff of Children’s National Medical center in 1991 after completing her pediatrics residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore and her fellowship in Medical Genetics at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD. She became division chief in 1996. Dr. Tifft completed her undergraduate studies at the University of California at San Diego and obtained an MS degree in Genetic Counseling at Rutgers University. In 1981 she completed her PhD in cell biology and genetics at the University of Texas Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences in Houston and completed her MD at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston. Dr. Tifft’s primary research interest has been the study of lysosomal storage disorders affecting the central nervous system, most notably the glycosphinglipid (GSL) storage disorders. She was a co-investigator in studying the efficacy of bone marrow transplantation in GSL storage disorders. She has published more than 30 articles and 25 abstracts. Dr. Tifft is former chair of the Scientific Advisory Committee for the National Tay-Sachs and Allied Diseases Association and currently serves as head of its clinical care committee.
