Research Interests
Brett J. Loechelt, MD, is a recognized expert in the fields of clinical immunology and blood and marrow transplantation. Dr. Loechelt is the director of Clinical Immunology and the director of the William and Shirley Howard Hematopoietic Stem Cell Laboratory in the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Children’s National Medical Center. Dr. Loechelt joined that staff at Children’s National Medical Center in 2002. He came from Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center where he was the medical director for Blood and Marrow Transplantation, a member of the Immunology team and assistant professor of Pediatrics at the University of Cincinnati. He earned his undergraduate degree in chemistry at Florida State University in Tallahassee, FL, and his medical degree at the University of Florida in Gainesville, FL. Dr. Loechelt completed a residency in Pediatrics at the University of Minnesota Hospitals and Clinics followed by a fellowship in Immunology and Blood/Marrow Transplantation also at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. Dr. Loechelt’s current research interests include investigating the cellular components of hematopoietic stem cell products and their impact on the immunologic complications of blood and marrow transplant. Dr. Loechelt is also part of a collaborative effort with the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to develop immunologic therapies to reverse isletitis in patients with new onset type 1 diabetes.
