Research Interests
Dr. Song has worked
in the field of hospital epidemiology and infection control for nearly
twelve years. She has profound experience in designing and conducting
clinical studies related to healthcare-associated infections and
multi-drug resistant organism. She is particularly proficient in
performing outcome studies assessing clinical and economic outcomes
attributable to healthcare-associated infections including ones caused
by multi-drug resistant organisms. Dr. Song works as a hospital
epidemiologist and independently and oversees infection control
activities at Children’s National Medical Center. This experience
further enriches her knowledge and understanding on prevention and
control of healthcare-associated infections in children. While the
healthcare society has been successful in eradicating major infections
such as central line associated bloodstream infections nationwide,
infections caused by multi-drug resistant organisms have become
increasingly concerning. Of them, diarrhea and severe diseases caused
by Clostridium difficile have been steadily increasing. For many
decades, children are thought “immune” to Clostridium difficile
infections. This thought has left us with little data about this
disease in children patients. Now in light of changing epidemiology of
Clostridium difficile infections, Dr. Song feels compelling to conduct
a study to accelerate the development of effective prevention and
clinical management strategies.
