Research Interests
Uta Lichter-Konecki, MD, PhD, is director of the Metabolism Program at Children’s National Medical Center. Dr. Lichter-Konecki joined the staff of Children’s in 2003. She earned her medical degree at the University of Heidelberg and her doctorate in medicine in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Heidelberg with a neuropediatrics and pediatric oncology related theme. She subsequently completed a 6 year residency and 3 year fellowship in the same department. During that time she specialized scientifically and clinically in inborn errors of metabolism. She became board certified in Pediatrics in 1993 and in 1995 she habilitated in Pediatrics and became a member of the medical faculty of the University of Heidelberg with the right to teach. When her family moved to the United States she first continued her research, on leave from the University of Heidelberg, at the Marshfield Medical Research Foundation and then became a fellow in the Metropolitan Washington DC Medical Genetics Training program at the National Human Genome Research Institute. She became board certified in clinical genetics in 2002 and in biochemical genetics in 2005. A pediatrician, clinical, and biochemical geneticist by training, Dr. Lichter's main interest has always been the pathophysiology of the brain damage observed in patients with inborn errors of metabolism. Other research interests have been lysosomal membrane proteins and renal Fanconi syndrome. Dr. Lichter is currently the site director of the Longitudinal Study of Urea Cycle Disorders at Children’s and has initiated a study regarding the effect of hypothermia treatment in hyperammonemic encephalopathy. Her translational research is focused on changes in astrocyte function during hyperammonemic encephalopathy. Dr. Lichter has published over 40 peer reviewed articles and chapters.
