Research Interests Jill G. Joseph, MD, PhD, MPH, is professor of Pediatrics and associate dean for Clinical and Translational Research at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. She holds the Agnes Hudson Endowed Chair in Health Services and Community Research. Dr. Joseph also serves as the director of the newly-combined Center for Clinical and Community Research. Dr. Joseph earned her MPH and PhD in epidemiology from the University of California at Berkeley in 1979, then conducted research in New Zealand for three years. She later joined the University of Michigan School of Public Health faculty where she was awarded tenure and promoted to associate professor, and subsequently research professor, of epidemiology. While at the University of Michigan, Dr. Joseph was one of the first investigators in the country to conduct rigorous research on behavioral and psychosocial aspects of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Mid-career, she obtained her MD from Michigan State University, completing a residency in pediatrics at Albert Einstein/Montefiore Hospital. Since joining the staff of Children’s National Medical Center in 1997, Dr. Joseph's work has broadly focused on understanding and addressing pediatric health disparities. Her work has included evaluating programs to enhance parental and child mental health in Head Start, a randomized trial of interventions to improve behavioral risk factors for adverse pregnancy outcomes in African-American women, and studies of violence exposure. As a generalist, Dr. Joseph has also participated in studies of pediatric traumatic brain injury, medication errors, and improved asthma treatment. Dr. Joseph is actively involved in mentoring and in the development of collaborative infrastructure for clinical and translational research.
