Research Interests
Irene Chatoor-Koch, MD, was born in Kassel, Germany and studied medicine at the University of Heidelberg, Germany, where she obtained her Doctor of Medicine, magna cum laude in 1965. After two years of rotating internship and a year of pediatric residency in 1968, she left Germany to work for six months in Trinidad in the West Indies. In 1969, she came to the United States and after a year of internship, she embarked on a residency in pediatrics at Children’s National Medical Center, followed by a residency in adult psychiatry at the George Washington University Hospital and a child psychiatry fellowship at Children’s, all in Washington, DC. She completed her training in 1976, when she started part-time private practice in child psychiatry and joined the faculty at Children’s. In 1985, she became a full-time faculty member in the Division of Psychiatry at Children’s and has held positions as Director of Inpatient Child Psychiatry, Director of Consultation and Liaison, Director of the Adolescent Psychosomatic Unit, and Interim Chair of the Division of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. At present, she is Vice Chair of the Division and director of the Infant and Toddler Mental Health Program at Children’s, as well as professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics at the George Washington University. Dr. Chatoor has specialized in feeding disorders in infants and young children. Her research has been funded through the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) to study feeding disorders in general and the diagnosis and treatment of infantile anorexia in particular. Dr. Chatoor has presented her research findings at national and international conferences and has been invited internationally to train professionals in the diagnosis of feeding disorders.
