Research Interests
Shireen Atabaki, MD, MPH, is a member of the Division of Emergency Medicine where she serves as Clerkship Director for the Pediatric Emergency Medicine Course at the George Washington University and Children’s National Medical Center. She also oversees an observership program in Pediatric Emergency Medicine for international physicians. Dr. Atabaki completed her residency in General Pediatrics and Fellowship in Pediatric Emergency Medicine at Children's National Medical Center. She obtained her MPH at the George Washington University School of Public health. Upon completion of her fellowship, Dr. Atabaki first joined the faculty of Boston University and later came to Children's National, where she has been since 1999. Dr. Atabaki's area of expertise is in traumatic brain Injury (TBI) and she has been both principal investigator and co-investigator for several studies in this area. She has worked on development of clinical decision rules for decreasing unnecessary CT scans, assessment and follow-up of concussions and medical therapies for prophylaxis of post-traumatic seizure. She has also developed clinical pathways for the management of TBI in the ED and other outpatient settings. Dr. Atabaki also has an interest in family centered care and family member presence for resuscitation and procedures in the Emergency Department and was funded through the Child Health Center Board to host a conference on this topic.
