Children’s Research Institute is located on the top floors of the main building of Children’s National Medical Center. This close proximity to patient care encourages doctors, nurses, and other staff to participate in research and collaborate with faculty solely dedicated to research work.
History
In 1990, the total research space at Children’s was 40,000 square feet. In 1995, the 5th floor of the main hospital building was constructed as a space dedicated solely to research—and it doubled the total research space to 80,000 square feet.
Until recently, all four research centers were primarily located on floor 5:
Two core facilities that support all investigators at Children’s also will relocate to floor 6.
Biostatistics and Informatics Core, which uses state-of-the-art techniques to assist researchers in designing and implementing scientifically sound studies. This expanding service provides assistance to research faculty with drafting survey questions or consulting with researchers on how best to quantify mathematical research results into significant findings.
The existing research floors, plus these expansions, now total 100,000 square feet dedicated solely to research at Children’s National Medical Center.
Clinical researchers and principal investigators from every center at Children’s National can work side-by-side, opening doors for greater collaborations from the bench to the bedside and out into the community—a hallmark of the multidisciplinary approach to research at Children’s National.
