Tobacco Use and Secondhand Tobacco Smoke Exposure Research
Children exposed to secondhand tobacco smoke (SHS) are at an increased risk for sudden infant death syndrome, upper and lower respiratory infections, poor lung development, and other serious conditions. Center for Clinical and Community Research scientists are involved in several efforts to study the effects of SHS exposure in children and ways to eliminate those exposures. Projects include:
- Studies of the most effective way to train pediatricians to counsel families to eliminate SHS exposure
- An intervention to reduce SHS exposure of pregnant women.
Center investigators are also involved with the Smoke Free Homes program, a national effort to train pediatricians in effective ways to counsel parents to make homes and cars smoke free.
