Muscle Physiology Research

The Center for Genetic Medicine Research created a program on muscle physiology because muscles play a critical role in so many of the genetic diseases investigated and treated—including obesity, muscular dystrophies, asthma and lung disease, and macular degeneration. Moreover, muscles have a tremendous capacity to adapt to physiological stimuli, such as activity, diet, and stress. Finally, it is relatively easy to obtain muscle tissue from healthy volunteers and muscle disease patients, which makes it a wonderful source for research. Center researchers are using sophisticated biology tools (including genomics, mRNA profiling, and proteomics) to better understand normal muscle physiology.

In particular, scientists at the Center for Genetic Medicine Research are leading a large series of national and international collaborations on the reaction of muscle to damaging contractions, aerobic conditioning, and diet. The research is yielding important findings on muscle physiology.
