Immunology Research Program

The Immunology research program is an interdisciplinary group of scientists from many research centers and clinical divisions at Children’s National. This group is associated through the Immunology Interest Group (IIG). The program's goal is to bridge the gap between basic (laboratory) and clinical research to better understand how the interactions of cells and molecules in the immune system contribute to serious disorders in children. Studies range from basic molecular and cellular immunology to the translational experimental and clinical immunology. The IIG meetings allow immunologists throughout Children’s National to exchange knowledge and ideas, and foster collaborations that will help reach the goal of better understanding and treatment of immune system related diseases, such as autoimmune diseases (e.g. lupus, juvenile diabetes, and myositis), immune deficiencies, asthma and allergies, bone marrow transplantation, and immunity to cancer.

Basic Science Immunology Research

T-lymphocyte differentiation Regulation of T cell granule exocytosis The role of gangliozides in immune function Immune, genetics basis, and gender issues in autoimmune diseases
Clinical/Translational Research

Bone marrow transplantation in primary immunodeficiencies
and hematopoietic malignancies

Alloimmunization in Sickle Cell Disease Asthma and allergies: Immune responses to tumors
