Transgender Issues

Edgardo J. Menvielle, MD, MSHS, a child and adolescent psychiatrist at Children's and an investigator in the Center for Health Services and Community Research, directs a clinical program that provides clinical care to children, adolescents and their families dealing with gender and sexual variance. The evolution of childhood gender variance ranges from a developmental stage to long-term transgender identity issues. The program offers individual evaluations and counseling, a monthly support group for parents, a peer group for children, a professionally moderated on-line list-serve reaching more than 80 families, and community outreach through presentations and advocacy.
