Healthcare Quality and Assessment

Led by Murray M. Pollack, MD, MBA, James Chamberlain, MD, and Anthony D. Slonim, MD, MPH, the Center for Health Services and Community Research has research interests in the area of healthcare quality, described broadly to include the multiple dimensions of the Institute of Medicine’s quality paradigm. Dr. Slonim’s major focus is in the area of patient safety and medical errors in hospitalized children. Drs. Chamberlain and Pollack, have developed and validated a severity adjustment methodology for use in the Emergency Department. The Pediatric Risk of Admission (PRISA) score is now in its second generation, after validation in two national studies. These methods of controlling for severity of illness are needed to measure and improve quality. They are now applying this score to quality assessment, measuring severity-adjusted admission decision-making and its association with hospital teaching status. They are also writing an article with Jill Joseph, MD, on disparities in admission practices based on race/ethnicity. Finally, they are examining severity-adjusted practice pattern variation in the treatment of asthma.
