Transporting the Most Precious Cargo
Children’s National is the only hospital in the region with a specialized air and ground transport system dedicated to newborns and children.
When time is of the essence, Children's Division of Transport Medicine is ready and waiting. Children’s National Medical Center has a specially trained pediatric Transport Team who makes the trip to medical care speedy and safe. The transport team is committed to the safety and well-being of a child in transit during that vital journey to the hospital.
Children’s Transport Team helps 4,000 patient each year, like Aron Northcraft. Baby Aron needed to be flown to Children’s National for heart surgery after being born more than 75 miles away. Mary Donofrio, MD, who evaluated Aron’s mom Sara during her pregnancy through the Center for Prenatal Evaluation, worked with the neonatal transport team to pre-arrange transport to Children’s. Once Aron was born, the team flew out to Winchester, Virginia, to meet Aron and his family. For other families, a trip to Children’s may be unexpected.
Children’s transport program has grown exponentially—from 0 pediatric transports in 1992 to more than 4,000 in fiscal year 2007. The neonatal transport team doubled its volumes since 2000.
What makes Children’s National Transport Team different? Children’s National is proud to be the only hospital in the region with a specialized air and ground transport system designed especially for newborns, infants, children, and adolescents. Patients not only receive care that’s tailored to their needs, but also the quality of care you would expect from one of the nation’s best pediatric hospitals.
Thanks to SkyBear, our rapid helicopter transport service, response times are faster than ever. And because our dedicated flight and ground teams are ready to administer critical treatment on the go, no time is wasted giving patients the care they need.
