Kurt Newman, MD, Begins as New CEO of Children’s National Medical Center
September 1, 2011

Kurt Newman, MD, President and CEOWashington, DC—With a pledge of fostering connections and encouraging innovation to improve children’s health, Kurt Newman, MD, began as the new President and Chief Executive Officer at Children’s National Medical Center today. Dr. Newman has been at Children’s National for more than 25 years and previously served as the Senior Vice President for the Joseph E. Robert, Jr., Center for Surgical Care.

Dr. Newman began his day at 4 am, when he greeted the staff members who work the night shift. He then spent time meeting with families, visiting with staff on the inpatient units, and traveling to some of the more than 30 satellite offices located throughout the region. Dr. Newman’s first few months as CEO will focus on gathering feedback, creating new connections, and promoting innovation at every level of the organization.

“When I first walked through the doors of this great organization 27 years ago, I knew I was home, so it really feels like I’ve come full circle,” said Dr. Newman. “I truly believe in Children’s National Medical Center and am committed to doing what’s right for kids and families, while continuing to push the boundaries of medicine and research through innovation and big thinking. I am excited about this new opportunity to re-set expectations of what we do and how we do it, never losing sight of our commitment to our patients and their families.”

Dr. Newman, 60, is the first physician to serve as CEO of Children’s National. Prior to this role, he was Senior Vice President of the Joseph E. Robert, Jr., Center for Surgical Care since 2003.

“Dr. Newman’s success as a pediatric surgeon, researcher, and administrator, combined with his passion for kids and visionary leadership, are a unique set of skills for a CEO,” said James Lintott, Chairman of the Board of Directors at Children’s National Medical Center. “The Board of Directors selected Dr. Newman because of his ability to embrace and proactively address challenges, while fostering a sense of pride and accountability at the nation’s children’s hospital.”

Dr. Newman began his career at Children’s National Medical Center as a student of Judson Randolph, MD, a pioneer in pediatric surgery. He also has led a period of tremendous growth and innovation, in both facilities and strategic partnerships. In 2009, Children’s National received a $150 million gift from the Government of Abu Dhabi that created the Sheikh Zayed Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovation.
